Welcome to Stolpen Castle – Simply Inescapable
Located between Saxon-Bohemian Switzerland and the Dresden city of culture, the extensive 800-year-old medieval castle complex rises above the land.
Its history is inseparably linked to the tragic fate of Countess Cosel, the most well-known mistress of Saxon Elector Augustus the Strong. The Countess spent 49 years there in captivity and was eventually buried there.
Further special features are witnesses to the Saxon art of mining – the »Stolpen basalt« which the castle rests on and the Earth’s deepest natural basalt well (84.39 m).
2016 will see the 300th anniversary of Countess Cosel’s incarceration at Stolpen Castle. On occasion of that anniversary, we are offering special activities and new events at Stolpen Castle during the whole year.
